Traffic offence lawyers in Montego Bay

Advice and representation for traffic tickets, summonses and licence matters in the Parish Courts.

A traffic ticket or summons can mean fines, demerit points, a suspended licence and, for the most serious charges, much worse. Since the Road Traffic Act, 2018 came into force, penalties are higher and the demerit point system is stricter, so it is worth getting advice before you pay a ticket you dispute or go to court.

We advise and represent drivers in traffic matters before the Parish Courts, including the St. James and Trelawny Parish Courts, and help with the licence consequences that follow.

Received a ticket or summons? Note the deadline on it. Tickets must be dealt with within the time allowed, and missing a court date can lead to a warrant. Contact us as soon as you can.

Traffic matters we handle

  • Speeding and exceeding the speed limit
  • Driving without a valid licence, insurance, registration or fitness certificate
  • Careless and reckless or dangerous driving
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Using a mobile phone while driving, seat belt and helmet offences

  • Charges following a road accident

Contesting a ticket

If you believe a ticket was issued wrongly, you can choose to contest it in court rather than pay. We review the circumstances, the evidence and the procedure followed, advise you honestly on your chances, and represent you at the hearing.

Demerit points and your licence

Many traffic offences carry demerit points as well as a fine. Building up too many points within the set period can lead to your licence being suspended. We advise on how a conviction would affect your record, and on applications relating to suspended or disqualified licences.

Professional and commercial drivers

For taxi, bus, truck and delivery drivers, a suspension can mean losing an income. We act quickly for professional drivers and transport operators, and advise employers whose drivers face charges.

After an accident

If you have been involved in a road accident, you may face a traffic charge and a civil claim at the same time, from the other driver or from your own injuries. We can advise on both. See our personal injury page if you were injured.

Questions clients ask

Should I pay a traffic ticket or contest it?

If you accept you committed the offence, paying within the time allowed is usually simplest. If you dispute it, you can contest it in court. Paying is treated as accepting the offence, and demerit points may follow, so take advice first if you are unsure.

What happens if I ignore a traffic ticket?

Unpaid tickets can be referred to court and a warrant may be issued for your arrest. Outstanding tickets can also stop you renewing your licence or registration. If you have old tickets, contact us and we will help you resolve them.

Can I lose my licence for traffic offences in Jamaica?

Yes. Some offences carry disqualification, and building up too many demerit points within the set period can lead to suspension.
